Sometimes a new gun can feel like a fresh breeze of air billowing into a stagnant room of rehashed or updated designs. The feeling is even better when it takes you by surprise or against your better judgement. Enter the CZ 805 Bren A1/A2, a stunning realisation by ASG.
The words glorious or exceptional didn't spring to mind when we first saw pictures of the Bren. It looks a bit ugly doesn't it? Like a best friend's child whom you don't want to look at, let alone hold. We're quite glad to say this all changed when we opened the box and held the gun.
The first thing that stood out to us was the matt black finish. It reeks of quality on both the plastic and metal parts, so much so that it's hard to identify which part is made from which material. The upper receiver, inner barrel, rails, and muzzle flash hider are metal whilst the rest of the gun is constructed from high density polymer, just like the real thing. The receiver's trademarks are clear and crisp and the selector switch options are brightly marked, a complete contrast of colour against the black body. The charging handle can also be installed on either side of the gun.
There is a lot of rail space available for pretty much any attachment you want to throw at it. The front and rear sight are both spring loaded and there are sling points available on the front and rear of both sides of the receiver. The stock design is exceptional. It is fully mega super adjustable. It can be extended and retracted, it has a cheek riser that can be swapped to accommodate left or right handed shooters and it can be folded to one side!
So what about the internals. We're quite glad to say that like the externals, they are of an equally high quality. Inside you will find a tried and tested version 3 gearbox, a rotary dial hop adjuster and a 375mm barrel. The battery compartment is accessed by removing a single pin near the rear of the receiver. This allows for the stock to be removed and gain access to the battery. One of the best features of this gun is also accessed this way, the quick change spring! This really is easy to change. Just remove the buffer tube cap by turning it clockwise to reveal the spring guide. Depress the spring guide and rotate 90 degrees and the guide and spring will come out. Change spring, reverse process. This allows the velocity to easily be changed so the gun can be used at any skirmish site.
The magazine is constructed from polymer and has a capacity of 550 BBs. Upon first release only high capacity magazines are available, however ASG manufacture a magwell adaptor to allow the use of M4/M16 magazines.
So there we have it. The CZ 805 Bren is built like a brick, performs admirably and has many great features that mean it can be used at almost any skirmish site. If only other AEG's offered as much.
