When the bottom ring is pulled a striker will hit the CO2 capsule. Pressure starts to build into the outer shell. When the specialist plastic reaches a certain pressure it splits with a resounding boom - at levels over 130db. A grenade comparable to the blank alternative, but one which is completely safe to use anywhere at all.
